Assessments begin after floodwaters subside
Floodwaters have subsided and county officials have begun assessing the damages left by the last remnants of Tropical Depression Fay. Governor Mike Easley is expected to visit Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties today and speak at the Concord Regional Airport.

State of emergency
Cabarrus County officials declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon in the wake of Tropical Depression Fay, which caused flooding and damaged as many as 60 homes. County Commission Chairman Jay White made the emergency call to allow residents to seek federal disaster relief funding to repair homes, county spokeswoman Amiee Hawkins said.

Is the drought over?
Drought monitoring authorities said it would take at least a week to understand if heavy rain improved conditions in Cabarrus County and across the state. Ryan Boyles, state climatology director, doesn't think that will be the case.

Electronic gizmos planned for race shop tours, Dale Trail
Tourism officials hope to have electronic devices to guide visitors to race shops and along the Dale Trail by May. The devices use GPS technology and feature touchscreens that display multimedia presentations when visitors approach points of interest.

Shady Brook Elementary puts reading first
Shady Brook Elementary School in Kannapolis has received recognition for getting more students reading at grade level under North Carolina's Reading First Initiative. The N.C. Department of Public Instruction has recognized Shady Brook as a Reading First School, given to those that demonstrate academic growth, collaboration among staff and leadership.

County readies to send notifications to residents for central area rezoning
Landowners in the unincorporated part of the county included in a recent, major land-use plan can expect rezoning notifications from Cabarrus County. And judging from phone calls to the county office Wednesday, officials said letters began arriving this week. Jonathan Marshall, the county's commerce director, said he expects even more public comment and queries to come from the notifications than were given during the land-use planning process, which received significant community participation.

UPDATE: No major injuries from flood, more rain coming

Water pours over a spillway of Kannapolis Lake after heavy rains over night. Before this week's storms, the lake was reportedly 40 inches below full. Now, officials say the lake is nearly 13 inches over full.
Kannapolis firefighters started evacuating 51 residents at Kannapolis Village Longterm Care because of flooding on Pine Street. Officials are evacuating three Harrisburg neighorhoods as water continues to rise.

National Night Out
Neighborhoods across the county celebrated the 25th annual National Night Out, an event aimed at reducing crime through community relationships. This is the seventh year the event has been hosted in Cabarrus County. In the Concord neighborhood of Magnolia Crossing, nearly 60 people arrived Tuesday for a block party sponsored by Habitat for Humanity Cabarrus County, Target and area police agencies.

More Cabarrus children getting home-school education
Eden Lipe accumulated high grades and enough community service last year to earn scholarships, but the Kannapolis resident didn't receive a diploma last spring from A.L. Brown High School. She was homeschooled. Eden was among an estimated 1,499 students in Cabarrus County enrolled in 892 home schools during the 2007-08 academic year, according to a report released last week by the N.C. Division of Non-Public Education.

Six elementary school principals to race buses
Six Cabarrus County elementary school principals will race school buses around Lowes Motor Speedway's quarter-mile oval during the Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout on Aug. 12. The principals will help rev up the crowd during championship night, in which winners will be crowned in each of the eight divisions of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Car racing.
