Music and dancing highlight Swanee Theatre late summer, fall lineup
Silent Disco gives dancers three styles of music to choose from, and the event on Friday, Aug. 21, is family-friendly.
The Swanee Theatre in downtown Kannapolis has announced a slate of late summer and fall events featuring dancing, family entertainment, comedy, tribute bands and live music.
The schedule includes recurring line and shag dance events, along with special performances, running through November. The historic former movie theater, now a concert and event venue, is located at 200 West Ave.
Tickets and registration for ticketed events are available at swaneetheatre.com. Unless otherwise noted, events are open to all ages, though anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Weekly dancing
Line Dancing Lessons — 6-8 p.m. Mondays: Lucky Line Dancing hosts free classes each Monday, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The classes are open to all ages and experience levels. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Registration is not required.
Open Shag Dancing — 7 p.m. Wednesdays: The theater hosts open shag dancing each Wednesday. The event is not a lesson and costs $5 per person at the door. The Swanee also offers separate shag dancing lessons, with registration information posted on its website.
Upcoming events
Silent Disco — 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21: Participants can choose among three music channels featuring ’80s and ’90s hits, 2000s and 2010s music, and a children's mix. The family-friendly event also includes games and a photo area. Participants must register separately for each one-hour time slot.
Children's Theatre Series: "Beauty and the Beast" — 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22: SIGMON THEATRICAL presents an immersive retelling of the classic story featuring music, effects, puppetry and interactive storytelling. After the performance, audience members can meet Belle, the Beast and members of the enchanted castle staff and take photos.
A Saturday performance of "Beauty and the Beast" is from SIGMON THEATRICAL, and cast members will be available for photos.
Mixology Class — 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28: Swanee Theatre staff will teach participants how to prepare three summer cocktails: a Paloma, Bahama Mama and Tom Collins. Participants must be 21 or older.
Grandparents Day Brunch — 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13: The theater will mark National Grandparents Day with a community brunch, crafts and optional activities. The menu is scheduled to include breakfast biscuits, French toast casserole or pancakes, hashbrown casserole and fresh fruit salad.
Comedy BINGO — 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25: Stand-up comedy will be mixed with bingo rounds and prizes during an interactive show featuring regional comedians. The lineup includes Jen Altizer, Kim Coleman, Craig Collin and Jordan Centry. Lauren Ansley will serve as host and show producer.
Feeling 22 — A Tribute to Taylor Swift — 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26: The family-friendly tribute show celebrates music from across Taylor Swift's career with live vocals and musicians performing songs from her various eras.
Do you like Jimmy Buffett? Captain Mike & The Shipwrecked is a Buffett tribute band, coming to the Swanee Theatre on Friday, Oct. 9.
Captain Mike & the Shipwrecked — Jimmy Buffett Tribute — 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9: The Jimmy Buffett tribute band will perform familiar hits and deeper cuts from Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band catalog.
Late Night Special — 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7: The Charlotte-based band brings its blend of Southern rock, funk, indie rock and soul to the Swanee. The group's sound draws on influences ranging from Led Zeppelin and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Kings of Leon and Prince.
Pandora's Box — Aerosmith Tribute — 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14: The Aerosmith tribute act will perform selections spanning the rock band's decades-long catalog, including music from its 1970s beginnings through its later chart hits.
