Trump orders national list of verified voters

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday to create a nationwide list of verified eligible voters, drawing legal threats.
The order, which voting law experts say violates the Constitution by attempting to seize the power to run elections from states, is among Trump's efforts to interfere with the way Americans vote based on his false claims of election fraud.
The order calls on the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration to make the list of eligible voters in each state. It also seeks to bar the U.S. Postal Service from sending absentee ballots to those not on each state's approved list.
CITIZENSHIP: The Supreme Court seemed poised Wednesday to reject President Donald Trump's restrictions on birthright citizenship as he became the first sitting president to attend arguments at the high court.
BONDI: President Donald Trump said Thursday that Pam Bondi, who oversaw investigations of his perceived foes and mass firings, is out as his attorney general after scrutiny over the Justice Department's handling of files related to its sex trafficking investigation of Jeffrey Epstein. Trump named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general.
CONVERSION THERAPY: The Supreme Court ruled against a law Tuesday that bans "conversion therapy" for LGBTQ+ kids in Colorado, one of about two dozen states that ban the discredited practice. An 8-1 majority sided with a Christian counselor who said the law violates the First Amendment.

PUBLIC MEDIA: Citing the First Amendment, a federal judge agreed Tuesday to permanently block the Trump administration from implementing a presidential directive to end federal funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, two media entities the White House said are counterproductive to American priorities.
REESE'S RECIPES: Hershey said Wednesday it will use classic recipes for all Reese's products starting next year, after the grandson of Reese's founder criticized the company for shifting to cheaper ingredients. A small portion of Hershey's and Reese's products, such as mini Easter eggs, are now made with a coating that contains less chocolate.
DUI CASE: Golfer Tiger Woods pleaded not guilty Tuesday and said he will seek treatment, four days after his vehicle crashed in Florida and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He will miss the Masters for the second straight year. A sheriff's report said deputies found two pain pills in his pocket and he showed signs of impairment.
SURFING DOG: Sugar the Surfing Dog, who comforted veterans as a dedicated therapy dog and was the first canine inducted into the Surfer's Hall of Fame, died Monday at age 16 after battling cancer. The rescue dog from Huntington Beach, Calif., who was a fivetime dog surfing world champion, died "in her daddy's arms," a post on her Instagram said.
Iran war continues to push up prices for gas

Iran fired more missiles at Israel and Gulf Arab states Thursday, even after U.S. President Donald Trump in a primetime address claimed the threat from the country was nearly eliminated.
With the war pushing up prices worldwide, the U.S. average for a gallon of gas topped $4 Tuesday, according to AAA. Trump, who fumed about NATO and mused about leaving the alliance, suggested countries that depend on oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz "must grab it" because the U.S. will not.
Meanwhile, a carrier strike group of more than 6,000 sailors deployed Tuesday and is slated to go to the Middle East, two U.S. officials said.
HOMELAND SECURITY: President Donald Trump said Thursday he would sign an order to pay all Department of Homeland Security employees who went without paychecks during the recordlong partial government shutdown, bypassing Congress, as the House contemplates passing a Senate plan it previously rejected.
ENDANGERED SPECIES: The Trump administration exempted oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico from the Endangered Species Act on Tuesday after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said environmentalists' lawsuits threatened to hobble domestic energy supplies as the U.S. wages war against Iran.
HOMELESS AID: A federal judge in Rhode Island ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration's effort to dramatically change the criteria to get tens of millions of dollars in funding to aid homeless people was unlawful.
