Central United Methodist Church is welcoming the Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh as the Houston Preaching Mission guest preacher on Sunday, March 15.
Central will gather for a combined worship service at 10:30 a.m. as Salleh brings a word of hope, depth and invitation during this Lenten season.
The Rev. Dr. Fatimah S. Salleh was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Puerto Rican and Malaysian mother and an African American father.
Salleh received her Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also earned a master's degree from Syracuse University in public communication and a second master's in Divinity from Duke University.
She is married to Eric Sorensen, and they have four children.
She is the founder of Curanopy Ministries and A Certain Work, an organization dedicated to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. She is also the author of "Love Memory: A Memoir and A Practice."
The Houston Preaching Mission is an annual lecture and sermon series hosted by Central United Methodist Church in Concord. Established in 1948 by Dr. William Cyrus Houston and his wife, Nina, it brings in renowned guest speakers to provide outstanding preaching to the community.
Harmony hot dog sale
The next hot dog sale at Harmony Church Concord will be on Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The sale is cash-only and will be either eat-in or takeout. Call-in orders may be made to 704-467-0179. The parish nurse will be there for a free blood pressure clinic.

McGill BBQ</p>
The 20th Annual McGill Baptist Church BBQ will be Friday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 5300 Poplar Tent Road, Concord.
Jim Avett will entertain at noon and 5:30 p.m. Hickory-smoked pulled pork plates are $15 each, including barbecue, slaw, chips and a roll. Three sandwiches are $15.
Bulk orders of 5-lb. barbecue, a pound of barbecue $13, a pint of Brunswick stew $8, or $14 for a quart. Barbecue slaw is $4 for a pint, and barbecue sauce is $5 for a pint.

Scholarships available
Two scholarships of up to $1,000 each are available to students who will be attending an accredited college, community college or technical school as full-time students upon graduation.
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary annually awards scholarships to recognize graduating seniors or students completing a GED within the fiscal school year from Kannapolis City, Cabarrus or Stanly County Schools. The scholarships will be paid to the recipients' chosen school.
The recipients will be chosen by a Scholarship Committee considering each applicant's financial need, their involvement in helping to better their community and their commendable character traits. Preference will be given to those planning to attend in-state, public institutions.

The Bulb Market at Grace Lutheran Church is open every Friday from 3-4 p.m. with fresh produce for the community. Cabarrus Rowan Community Health Center will be offering primary care and basic health screenings on-site at the church on the second Friday of each month. Grace Lutheran is at 58 Chestnut Drive, Concord.
Friday hot dogs
McGill Baptist Church, 5300 Poplar Tent Road, hosts a weekly hot dog event on Fridays (except holidays) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hot dogs will be sold along with fried bologna and barbecue sandwiches and desserts. Sales are every Friday except on holidays and the annual Missions Barbecue in the spring.
Epworth hot dogs
Epworth United Methodist Church's weekly hot dog sale goes through May from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays (except holidays). Epworth is at 1030 Burrage Road NE, Concord. Electronic payments accepted. For deliveries, call 704-786-5500.
