HISTORIC CABARRUS ASSOCIATION
The Kannapolis History Associates will welcome former Reed Gold Mine manager John Dysart for a special presentation on the history and significance of North Carolina's famed gold site.
The event, titled "Reed Gold Mine," is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, May 4, at A.L. Brown High School's social room.
Dysart, who managed Reed Gold Mine from 1979 until his retirement in 2004, will share insights into the early development of the historic site and its connection to Cabarrus County history. He first became interested in the mine during his college years under the guidance of Dr. H.G. Jones, who helped bring the site into the state's historic system in 1971.
The program will also highlight the role of the Gold History Corporation, a support group that helped preserve the site through artifact acquisition, programming and fundraising. Notable contributors with ties to Kannapolis included Harold Nash and Jack Foard, whose efforts helped establish popular events such as Heritage Days, the Gold Rush Run gold panning competitions and seasonal celebrations.
Dysart will discuss why Reed Gold Mine is recognized as the site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States and how that discovery influenced regional and national growth. His presentation will also explore other mining locations across North Carolina and neighboring states.
A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, and attendees will have an opportunity to visit the museum and history room before and after the event.
The high school is located at 415 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. Parking is available east of Trinity Methodist Church, with access via the sidewalk near the Kannapolis Performing Arts Center.
