DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was Iran's top leader for decades and sought to turn the Islamic republic into a regional powerhouse, bringing it into confrontation with Israel and the United States over its nuclear program while crushing democracy protests, was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes. He was 86.
Iranian state media reported his death early last Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he should be involved in choosing Iran's leader as the U.S. and Israel hammered the country for a sixth day. He ruled out Mojtaba Khamenei, a front-runner to replace his father.

WASHINGTON — The House Oversight Committee voted Wednesday to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi to answer questions over the Justice Department's handling of files regarding the sex trafficking investigation of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Five Republicans joined Democrats to support the subpoena proposed by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., a sign of continued frustration among conservatives with the department's review and release of Epstein documents.
The move came a week after the Justice Department said it was looking into whether it improperly withheld documents from the files after news reports that some records involving uncorroborated accusations a woman made against President Donald Trump were not among those released to the public.
