Happy Independence Day
TCM, beginning at 6:30 a.m.
Kick off your Fourth of July with a Hollywood classic as TCM spends the day showcasing the diverse landscape and vibrant stories of the American experience. The lineup includes Judge Hardy and Son (1939), which sees Andy Hardy (Mickey Rooney) trying to track down the daughter of an immigrant couple in order to save their home; The Howards of Virginia (1940), a pre-Revolutionary War drama about a farmer (Cary Grant) who marries into a wealthy family but finds his marriage strained by his allegiance to the uprising; The Scarlet Coat (1955), the story of a Continental Army officer who goes undercover to expose Benedict Arnold's treason; and 1776, a 1972 musical retelling of the Founding Fathers' struggle to get the Declaration of Independence signed. The highlight of the lineup is 1942's Yankee Doodle Dandy, a musical morale booster released just months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor that was Warner Bros.' highest-grossing picture to that point and won James Cagney an Oscar for Best Actor. The theme concludes with the 1962 musical The Music Man (pictured), set against the backdrop of Independence Day.

CATCH A CLASSIC
Bringing Up Baby
TCM, noon
The undisputed gold standard of the screwball comedy genre, Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby (1938) pairs delightfully unhinged socialite Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn) with hilariously flustered Dr. David Huxley (Cary Grant) in a tale of a mild-mannered paleontologist whose life is upended by an eccentric heiress and her pet leopard, Baby. While now considered a master class in rapid-fire dialogue, impeccable physical comedy and undeniable star chemistry, the film's path to legendary status was anything but a straight line. Upon its initial release, the film was a notorious commercial flop, and Hepburn was labeled "box office poison." But history has proved differently, both for Hepburn and the film, as Bringing Up Baby has appeared on numerous lists of the greatest American films of all time and was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 1990.
