CATCH A CLASSIC
Splendor in the Grass
TCM, 5:45 p.m.
Elia Kazan's Splendor in the Grass (1961) tackles teenage sexuality with a frankness that was revolutionary for its time — and remains startlingly honest today. Natalie Wood stars as Deanie Loomis, a Kansas high school girl in the 1920s whose passionate relationship with Bud Stamper (Warren Beatty, in his film debut) is sabotaged by parental pressure and societal expectations. Wood earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, capturing Deanie's mental breakdown with heartbreaking authenticity, and William Inge won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film's title comes from Wordsworth's poem about lost innocence, and Kazan earns that reference — this is a deeply felt story about how we can never quite recapture what we've lost.
