Françoise Sagan's bittersweet novel comes to life in Otto Preminger's emotionally complex 1958 drama set on the French Riviera. Jean Seberg stars as a restless teenager whose carefree summer with her playboy father takes a darker turn when a sophisticated new woman enters their lives. Shot in a striking mix of vivid color and moody black and white, the film captures both the glamour and the melancholy of Sagan's world. David Niven and Deborah Kerr deliver beautiful performances.

CATCH A CLASSIC
Starring Carole Lombard
TCM, beginning at 8 p.m.
Combining high glamour with superb wit, Carole Lombard, one of the most accomplished actors of the screwball comedy genre, is honored in a TCM retrospective tonight with three of her films from the 1930s. The evening begins with 1936's Love Before Breakfast (pictured), a fine example of Depression-era escapist fare about the rich and glamorous, with Lombard adorned in gowns by designer Travis Banton. Next is the first of her movies with Fred MacMurray, Hands Across the Table (1935), where both stars play poor people looking to marry rich, but who end up falling in love with each other. Finally, in 1932's Virtue, Lombard plays a former prostitute who marries Jimmy (Pat O'Brien), a taxicab driver. But will her past catch up to her?
