CATCH A CLASSIC
31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes for the Laugh
TCM, beginning at 6 a.m.
Fortunately, the academy isn't all seriousness and, all day today, TCM lets you enjoy some good belly laughs and witty chuckles in some of the best comedies ever made, representing many different types of humor. There are black-and-white romantic comedies like 1934's It Happened One Night (pictured), with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable; 1940's The Philadelphia Story, with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant as sparring exes; and My Man Godfrey (1936), with real-life exes Carole Lombard and William Powell.Comedy teams of the '60s are showcased in 1961's Lover Come Back, with Doris Day and Rock Hudson; The Fortune Cookie (1966), featuring the first pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau; and 1967's The Producers, starring Gene Wilder in one of his many collaborations with writer/ director Mel Brooks. Also enjoy work from some of film's greatest comedians in the Marx Brothers' A Day at the Races (1937); Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940); and Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953). Finally, take in some fun nostalgia with more modern comedies such as 1977's Annie Hall, with Diane Keaton and Woody Allen; 10 (1979), with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek; and 1982's Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman playing a female soap opera star. Laugh along with a lineup that's all in good fun today.

The Bad and the Beautiful
TCM, 10:15 p.m.
Long before reality television pulled back the curtain on celebrity culture, Hollywood was already fascinated with telling stories about the making of movies and their stars. Vincente Minnelli's The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) remains one of the sharpest and most entertaining examples of that tradition. Kirk Douglas gives an incredible performance as a ruthless film producer whose former colleagues reflect on how his ambition helped create their careers, even as it nearly destroyed them personally. Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon and Gloria Grahame, who won an Oscar for her role, round out a remarkable ensemble cast. At the time, Grahame's performance, which comprised only about nine and a half minutes of screen time, was the shortest performance to ever win an Academy Award.
