SALISBURY — The Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Future Business Leaders of America-Collegiate chapter delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 North Carolina State Leadership Conference, earning top honors across competitive events and statewide recognition for leadership and service.
Held in Charlotte this spring, the conference brought together some of the most competitive FBLA-Collegiate chapters from across North Carolina. Rowan-Cabarrus stood out as one of the largest and most active delegations, with 22 student competitors, three advisors and five guests participating.
Of the 22 students who competed, 21 placed in the top eight of their respective events, demonstrating a high level of academic achievement and professional preparedness. Five students, Corey Bacon, Damaris Villanueva Castro, Isabela Jimenez, Tad Johnson and Colin Williams, were named to North Carolina FBLA-Collegiate’s Who’s Who, the organization’s highest individual honor at the state level. This recognition is based on a cumulative point system reflecting leadership roles, chapter involvement and competitive performance at the state and national levels. Williams was also selected as the state’s National Who’s Who nominee after earning the highest number of verified points statewide.
“This level of achievement speaks volumes about the drive and dedication of our students,” said Dr. Carol S. Spalding, president of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. “They are not only excelling in competition but also developing the leadership skills that will serve them well in their careers and in our communities.”
In addition to competition and recognition, 16 Rowan-Cabarrus students successfully completed the Leadership Development Program during the conference. The program included workshops and guest speaker sessions focused on communication, teamwork, ethical decision-making and strategic thinking, preparing students to contribute as emerging leaders in their academic, professional and community environments.
Throughout the academic year, Rowan-Cabarrus students also demonstrated strong leadership within the FBLA-Collegiate organization at both the state and national levels. Isabela Jimenez served as North Carolina vice president of marketing, and Colin Williams served as North Carolina vice president of membership and currently serves as national vice president of operations. Williams was recently elected North Carolina state president for the 2026 to 2027 term during the state conference.
“Being involved in FBLA-Collegiate has challenged me to grow both personally and professionally,” said Williams. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Rowan-Cabarrus and continue serving in a leadership role at the state level.”
Rowan-Cabarrus faculty and advisors play an active role in supporting the college’s FBLA-Collegiate chapter, including lead faculty of accounting and economics Chad Nichols, accounting faculty Cynthia Trevisan and economics faculty Vincent Nyanor. In addition to guiding students in these programs, they also contribute to the organization at the state level.
Nichols and Trevisan served on the State Awards Program Committee, supporting the planning and execution of the statewide recognition program, while Nyanor assisted with event administration. Nichols, who has served as North Carolina Administrative Services director for eight years, was also elected state executive director for the 2026 to 2030 term and will lead the North Carolina FBLA-Collegiate State Chapter.
“It is incredibly rewarding to watch our students step into these competitive environments and rise to the occasion,” said Nichols. “Beyond the awards, what stands out most is their growth in professionalism and leadership throughout the year. They are building skills and confidence that will carry with them far beyond the competition.”
These continued achievements reflect the commitment of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to developing student leaders who are prepared to succeed in competitive, professional environments. Through academic programs, hands-on experiences and leadership opportunities like FBLA-Collegiate, the college equips students with the skills and confidence needed to excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions in their communities.
