CONCORD — More than two dozen years after Hartsell Middle School closed its doors, former teachers and staff members gathered May 16 to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate their shared history.
Twenty-one former faculty and staff members attended the reunion at the Hartsell Recreation Center, located on the former school grounds at 60 Hartsell School Road. The gathering featured stories, laughter and reflections on years spent educating students at the school.
Among those attending was Richard Lapish, 94, who served as both assistant principal and principal during his career at Hartsell. Lapish shared memories and experiences from his years as an educator with the group.
Hartsell High School was established in 1924 and named for J.L. Hartsell. The campus later became Hartsell Middle School, serving seventh and eighth-grade students from 1975 until 1990. The school was replaced by J.N. Fries Middle School for the 1990-91 academic year, when sixth graders were added to the middle school program.
As a special memento, each attendee received a Hartsell Bulldogs plaque crafted by Regina Hinson from wood salvaged from the original Hartsell gymnasium floor.
Organizers Regina Hinson and Clara Culnon said the event was filled with enthusiasm, nostalgia and excitement as former colleagues revisited memories from their years together at the school.
Those attending the reunion included Ann Overcash, Carolyn Williams, Mary Ann Johnson, Jan Holshouser, Bobbi Bryson, Sandy Hagler, Debbie Cress, Brenda Smith, Dale Ritchie, Robert Bost, Suzanne Grayson, Jim Dellinger, Ann Glosson, Stephanie Cude, Darrell Coble, Marvin Francis, Susan Bennett and Wayne Strickland, along with Lapish, Hinson and Culnon.
