This region has been host to a slate of events in recent days. Check out these images from the All-Star Race, the Relay for Life events and more.

Linesman Rodeo Catawba Meadows Park 2018-2335.jpg

It wasn't your typical rodeo when 73 lineman took to Catawba Meadows Park on May 17 for the 21st annual NC Association of Municipal Electric Systems' Lineman's Rodeo. Apprentice and journeyman linemen from municipal electric systems from across the state competed in seven different events simulating situations they would experience on the job, according to Brooks Kirby, electric services director for the city of Morganton.

The linemen were judged by members of the NCAMES Safety and Training Committee, operating utility supervisors and past rodeo participants, according to the rodeo information packet. Judges considered safety procedures, work practices, equipment handling and timely completion of events while scoring contestants’ performances.

The top winners of the competition will be awarded $500 cash and an all-expense paid trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, next year to compete in the national version of the rodeo, presented by the American Public Power Association.

Approximately 5,000 messages of kindness were on display at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Saturday.

The Kindness Mural featured kind words, ideas and thoughts from Hickory Public Schools' students and staff.

The display was created and organized by HPS 2017-2018 Co-Volunteer of the Year, Molly Bass, and a group of students from Hickory High.

The Kindness Mural is a collaborative effort with the HPS Kindness Project—an ongoing recognition initiated by Beverly Snowden, HPS director of communications, designed to spotlight and honor HPS staff and students who are caught sharing acts of kindness.

The goal of the collaborative kindness initiative is to help create a climate of kindness within the schools and the surrounding communities.

All photos were taken by Reporter Jordan Hensley.
