Football season in Cabarrus County will unofficially kick off Friday, Aug. 14, when eight local high school teams take the field for the 2026 Cabarrus County Football Jamboree at Jay M. Robinson High School.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association board of directors voted Wednesday to officially sanction girls’ flag football and boys’ volleyball, expanding athletic opportunities for student-athletes across the state beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association softball and baseball state playoffs began Tuesday, and Cabarrus County is well-represented.
Hickory Ridge topped Cox Mill 3-0 to take the GMAC soccer title. It caps a week in which the Bulls also won the conference softball and baseball titles.

The highly anticipated girls’ soccer rematch between Northwest Cabarrus and Robinson got off to a really weird start. Hours before the Trojans and Bulldogs were to take the field at Northwest, a boil water order was issued for Kannapolis and the area around the school. So, instead of it being a home game for the Trojans, the two teams played a neutral site game, at Concord.

The Hickory Ridge High School varsity Swim & Dive team delivered a historic performance at the Greater Metro 6A/7A (GMAC) Conference Championships, with both the boys and girls teams finishing first overall. The night was especially memorable for the girls' program, which captured its first conference championship in school history, marking a milestone moment for the Ragin’ Bulls.
CHAPEL HILL — After more than three decades of service to education-based athletics in North Carolina, Que Tucker has announced she will retire as Commissioner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, effective Oct. 1.
The Central Cabarrus Vikings made the championship game in the F&M Bank Cannon Ballers Invitational High School Baseball tournament, thanks in large part to their offense. They averaged 10 runs a game through their first two games in the tournament. South Rowan, their opponent in the final, was even better, averaging over 13 runs a game. So, naturally, the championship game was a pitcher’s duel.
High school basketball season in Cabarrus County has come to an end. Jay M. Robinson’s boys team lost in the 5A West Regional final to the top-seeded Hunter Huss, 72-63.
