MIDLAND— A Midland man has been charged in the murder of his stepfather.

Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Deputies charged Jason Allen Harkey, 45, of Midland, with second-degree murder following a homicide investigation on Monday, Aug. 19. The victim in the case is Arthur Thompson, 71, also of Midland.

At about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a resident at 14045 Hopewell Church Road, Midland, in reference to a gunshot victim.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene with crime scene investigators and found Thompson inside his home. Despite lifesaving efforts, Cabarrus Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel pronounced Thompson dead at the scene. A witness identified Harkey, the victim’s stepson, as the suspect.

The altercation was the result of a domestic dispute between Harkey and Thompson, witnesses told investigators.

Harkey was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Cabarrus County Detention Center under no bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
