Recently I had an opportunity to interview a first time author from our community. His name is John Lefler, the author of Holding Putter.
The author is certainly to a tremendous start with his debut novel, Holding Putter. This is an enchanting story of living in rural North Carolina during the 1950s. His book paints a rich tale of a young man with developmental challenges in his life that makes the best of his personal situation.
The novel centers around the life and times of Sammy, who suffers from a chronic medical issue that is easily treated here in the 21st century, the details of which I'll leave to the reader to discover. This young fella is supported emotionally and otherwise by a loving family who recognizes his challenges but still expects him to contribute to the extent that his medical problems will allow - no coddling going on in this household.
As the book progresses the reader will note that Sammy wishes to be normal just like everyone else in the world. As he grows and matures he makes keen observations about his life and how others lead theirs. All of these observations appear to be learning opportunities for Sammy, both the positive and negative ones. You'll see Sammy come to the opinion that in life none of us are truly "normal".
Of course the very practical challenge for Sammy and his family is dealing with his daily medical issues. The enchanting wonder of his life appears on his doorstep as a stray chihuahua which the family adopts though enthusiasm for the animal is not unanimous. The animal is partially crippled and is cared for lovingly by the family. Eventually it is discovered the dog has unique abilities which aid Sammy greatly in dealing with his health issues.
The rich tale progresses through Sammy's life pointing out things that a North Carolina native may in fact identify himself as he reads, especially in the Cabarrus County, Gaston County, and Charlotte areas. For me, one of the back stories I observed was the unlikely making of a future state trooper that I felt just continued this positive tale of redemption.
The novel, less than 200 pages, was a positive message about all our lives and to me a reminder to live life to the fullest. Be sure at the conclusion of the book to read some of the poetry contained about Slim Sam Flimflamigen. I highly recommend the book.
The novel is available at local book stores and at Barnes & Noble in both an ebook format as well as paperback and hardback.
