Ground zero ceremonies. Newly built memorials. Silence. Prayers. Americans have honored 9/11 in many ways over the past 20 years. A reflective look back.
Since 9/11, many Muslim Americans have faced hostility and surveillance, mistrust and suspicion, questions about their Muslim faith and doubts over their Americanness. They've also found ways forward.
Twenty years ago, the 11th of September dawned as just a date. By midnight, it was 9/11, the staggering starting point for a new era of terror, war, politics, patriotism and tragedy.
In remembrance of the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, here's a selection of photos from more than two decades of tributes, memorials and observances across the country.

Workers are setting the stage for the World Trade Center's newest component. It isn't another office tower. Nor is it another monument, at least explicitly, to the memory of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. It's a theater complex.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two accomplices in the attack are expected to enter the pleas as soon as next week.
Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union said Saturday it plans to challenge the plea deal reversal in court.
