Gene Misenheimer CONCORD Mr. Eugene J. Misenheimer, 91, passed away at his home Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Anderson officiating. The U.S. Navy will present military rites at the church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the parlor at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. On Sept. 11, 1922, Gene was born in Concord. His parents were Joe P. and Lillie Talbert Misenheimer. He retired from Concord Telephone Company after rendering 40 years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served aboard the USS Corry and USS Compton. His ship (USS Corry) led the D-Day invasion and was sunk off of Utah Beach. He proudly kept in touch with his fellow Corry crewmates throughout the years through reunions and correspondence. Gene was an avid camper, a skilled woodworker, a green thumb in both his garden and lawn, a hard worker, a caring pet owner, and loving person. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon M. Rollins; and sons-in-law, Patrick Burk and Garry Rollins. Mr. Misenheimer is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred Edwards Misenheimer; son, Gary E. Misenheimer of Greensboro; daughter, Patti Burk of Matthews; brother, Joe Misenheimer Jr. and wife, Sarah; sisters, Margaret Lackey and husband, Leon, Betty Morgan, Nancy Farris and husband, Buddy and Janie Washam; granddaughter, Laurie B. Hodge and husband, Michael; and great-grandchildren, Ben and Ellie Hodge. Rather than flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, P.O.
