Gail Rhodes CONCORD Mrs. Gail Dorton Rhodes, 81, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Tucker Hospice House. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie W. Parker officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Gail was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late C.A. and Pearl Tarlington Dorton. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Dorton and wife, Lorene; and nephew, Randy Dorton. Gail graduated from Hartsell High School in 1950 as Class Salutatorian and with honors. That year, she was Miss Cabarrus County. She attended Phiffer College (University) and graduated from Evans Business College in Concord. Her working career began at GMAC in Charlotte with 20 years of service. Later, she worked as a teacher's assistant in the Charlotte Schools until her retirement from Piney Grove Elementary School. Gail was a most gifted seamstress and made countless crocheted items which she gave to family and friends. She made over 200 lap blankets for the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House. On June 5, 1954, Gail was united in marriage to Keith Rhodes at Harmony United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member. They celebrated 59 years together. Keith survives her along with a daughter, Anne Millwater and husband, David, of Finger, N.C. Also surviving are her nephew, Keith Dorton and wife, Patsy and special great-nephew, Jonathan, all of Concord; sisters-in-law, Sue Deming, of Charlotte and Louise Cox, of Matthews; brother-in-law, Dick Rhodes and wife, Ann, of Kings Mountain; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
