The Heisman Trophy is one of the most coveted awards in the sports world. For fans and gamblers, a lot of the fun comes by following the race throughout the college football season and checking to see which players are improving their stock and which ones are falling behind.
As we are now about halfway through the college football season, it’s time for a 2023 Heisman Trophy odds update. Here are the three top contenders as well as our best bet to win this prestigious award.
2023 Heisman Trophy odds
Heisman favorite:Â Michael Penix Jr., Washington QB (+270)
Michael Penix Jr. has got the Washington Huskies on fire and contending for a spot in the college football playoff. The quarterback has proved that he has one of the best arms in college football as he has been able to throw the ball all across the field. He currently has 24 passing touchdowns against just six interceptions, as well as almost 3,000 passing yards.
The Huskies are 8-0 and sitting first in the Pac-12. If Penix Jr. can keep up this torrid passing pace and the Huskies keep winning, he’s a good bet to win the Heisman Trophy. However, they have some tough games coming up against USC, Utah, and Oregon State.
Heisman Trophy favorite:Â J.J. McCarthy, Michigan QB (+300)
While Michigan is dealing with a potential sign-stealing scandal off the field, J.J. McCarthy continues to focus on what he can do on the field. McCarthy is quarterbacking what is likely the second best team in the country. While his raw numbers are not as strong as Penix Jr’s, McCarthy does face a tougher schedule.
Michigan still has some huge games coming up including battles against Penn State and Ohio State. A couple of big performances in those games would help McCarthy garner the support he needs to jump into first place.
Heisman contender:Â Jayden Daniels, LSU QB (+450)
Jayden Daniels has been rising up Heisman Trophy odds tables as he continues to sling the football for LSU. Daniels has 25 throwing touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has thrown eight scores against just one interception against AP top 25 ranked teams.
If you’re looking for a larger return, Daniels could be the pick. However, he’s going to need to take his already strong season to another height to usurp the other two players from the spots atop this list.
Heisman Trophy picks: J.J. McCarthy, Michigan QB (+300 or better)
Getting J.J. McCarthy at this number is great value at this point in the season. The Michigan Wolverines have looked like the second best team in the country this season and thus have a solid chance of running the table until the college football playoff. If they do so, McCarthy is going to start to garner even more attention and add some very impressive victories to his resume.
Penix Jr. does not have as strong a supporting cast around him to help in those big moments. Look for McCarthy to step into the role as college football’s golden boy. He already leads the nation in QB rating and will just continue to add to his stats as the season goes on.
