SUMTER, S.C. — The Catawba College men's and women's tennis programs are set to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships this weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Participating institutions are guaranteed two singles players and one doubles team selected by each team's coach. All regionally ranked players qualify while the remaining slots are filled according to World Tennis Number (WTN), the global rating system for all tennis players.
Catawba student-athletes Luca Bergonzi, Katya Kldiashvili, Andrea Landaeta and Emil Remsted will compete as individuals in singles and doubles tournament brackets. Top performers in the event will receive berths to the inaugural ITA Division II Singles & Doubles Championships hosted in Tuscaloosa, Ala., next month.
Bergonzi headlines the returners from the men's team's charge into the national semifinals last season in which he went a perfect 15-0 in singles with a 13-4 record as part of the top doubles pair. Remsted followed head coach Michael Cabana from Wingate to Salisbury as the Danish sophomore is coming off a strong college debut, posting ledgers of 6-6 in singles and a solid 11-4 mark in doubles.
Kldiashvili is slated to lead a young Catawba women's team after her remarkable rookie campaign that helped the Catawba Indians become national runners-up. This spring, she exclusively played singles with a 13-5 record at the fourth and fifth flights. Kldiashvili is joined by newcomer Landaeta, a Texas A&M Kingsville transfer who had identical 11-8 tallies in singles and doubles as a sophomore with the Javelinas.
