Here is an overview shot of the old Cabarrus Correctional Facility that will now be the new home of Southern Grace Distilleries.
Perry Morris, the distiller for Southern Grace Distilleries. Morris has packed up a box of Sun Dog 130 to ship to ABC officials in Raleigh, who regulate the distribution of liquor. Sun Dog 130 is the first product created by Southern Grace Distilleries, whose distillery is based out of the old Warren C. Coleman mill at 625 Main St. SW, Concord. This shipment includes 45 cases of legal moonshine, adding up to 540 bottles. The bottles will retail for $29.95 for 750 milliliters or a fifth. The product should be on the shelves of ABC stores in Concord within about the next 10 days. Leanne Powell, president of Southern Grace Distilleries, said they are already working to develop their next product, which will be a fruit infused moonshine. They have already received recipe approval for that product from Raleigh officials and are currently waiting on their label approval. Powell said that product should be ready to release within the next two months or so.
MOUNT PLEASANT - Southern Grace Distilleries took one step closer to completing a big transformation: turning an old prison into a new whiskey production site.
The town of Mt. Pleasant decided to contract out solid waste services, hiring Waste Pro, an outside company, to pick up garbage and recycling. This freed up the four full-time public works staff to focus on other projects.
About two weeks ago, staff helped deliver the new garbage cans that are compatible with the new truck, which uses a mechanic side arm to pick up the cans and dump them in the back. All of the town's old cans converted to new recycling bins.
"We helped put out 725 new cans," Town Administrator Randy Holloway said. "Everybody pulled together two weeks ago and made that pretty smooth."
Waste Pro picked up its first round of trash Friday, Aug. 1, and Holloway said everything went smoothly. The public works crew rode along to help with any snags, and they'll do the same this Friday, Aug. 12, before setting Waste Pro out on its own.
"We're very excited that we're going to be out of the solid waste business," Holloway said. "Thanks to our customers. We did very well. We're very pleased."
