McDowell County Schools is proud to announce Mrs. Deeana Ray, principal of Glenwood Elementary School, has been selected as the 2026–2027 McDowell County Schools Principal of the Year.
This recognition celebrates school leaders who go above and beyond to create positive learning environments, inspire those around them, and make a lasting difference in the lives of students and staff.
Each year, the selection process begins with nominations from the MCS Leadership Team, including district directors and principals. Nominees are recognized for their ability to foster collaboration, encourage academic innovation, and lead with integrity and compassion. Principals across the district then vote to select the individual they believe best exemplifies these qualities.
As the district honoree, Mrs. Ray will advance to the Region 7 (Northwest) Principal of the Year competition, where she will join 15 other district principals for an opportunity to earn the regional title. The eight regional winners will then be considered for the North Carolina Principal of the Year honor in the spring.
Mrs. Ray's recognition is a reflection of her dedication to the Glenwood Elementary community and her commitment to supporting students, empowering educators, and building a school culture where everyone has opportunities to succeed.
Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Deeana Ray on this well-deserved honor. McDowell County Schools is proud to have her representing the district and wishes her the very best as she moves forward in the regional competition.
