Over the past year, Grandfather Mountain has been looking for a new home for Doc, who is named after legendary guitarist Doc Watson. The search began last year after park leadership concluded that it would ultimately be beneficial to the park’s elk if one was located to a new home.

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has rescued an elk that caused safety concerns during rutting season at Grandfather Mountain, the nonprofit nature park in the North Carolina mountains.

Newman said that Grandfather Mountain’s mission of inspiring conservation of the natural world was in line with Rescue Ranch’s goals of educating children about nature, as well as his own views as an outdoorsman.
