This narrative is directed at all the unpublished authors out there. Before I wrote my first book, I spent twelve hours a day, for months, typing away.
Months later, I picked up my head and took a deep breath. I looked down at the bottom left hand corner of my computer screen, only to see a number glaring back at me from a small partition. I stared at that number until it dawned on me, that I had managed to write a staggering 243,886 words in just over five months.
So the question is, “What did I write about?” Honestly, I wrote about anything that came to mind. For example, I went shopping for a specialty cat food late one evening. I remember needing help locating a particular item in this store but thought it was a mistake to ask an eighteen-year-old employee for assistance. I scoped around for another worker but the only other worker was a cashier –who looked younger.
So, during my recording of this event, I asked myself some simple questions. For instance, why did I choose this store? Why was the store so crowded? Who were the customers inside? And who takes their cat, a ferret or a rabbit shopping with them?
Well, there was a patron with a bird on his shoulder in this store. Who does that? Anyway, if that wasn’t unique enough, the bird talked. This African Grey asked everyone who walked by if it was pretty.
The customer interactions with this bird were quiet entertaining. Now, as far as I know, an African Grey is a mimic. It’s not capable of having a conversation. However, this didn’t deter anyone there, including myself, from trying to do just that. When I approached the bird, it engaged me and asked, “Am I pretty?”
I instinctively responded back to this bird without realizing it. The owner was so accustomed to the bird’s behavior that he never looked up at me or anyone else.
“Yes, you’re a pretty bird,” I replied. “Am I pretty,” the bird repeated? “Yes, you are.”
“Am I pretty,” the bird asked yet again?
“Geez, I said you were a very-pretty bird,” I repeated with admiration.
After all my praise, the African Grey looked at me and said, “Well, you’re funny looking,”
then flew off.
