Sometimes the most powerful ideas are also the simplest.
At Mecklenburg Design Day 3.0, a spoken word artist captured the heart of collective impact with a metaphor that resonated throughout the room:
“Collective impact is like a potluck. We’re not being asked to simply admire the feast. We’re being asked to bring a dish.”
That message is one we carry with us every day at United Way of Greater Charlotte.
Strong communities are never built by one organization, one leader, or one solution. They are built when neighbors, nonprofits, businesses, schools, local governments, and residents each contribute what they have to create something far greater than any one of us could accomplish alone.

Just like a potluck, every contribution matters.
Some bring resources. Others bring lived experience. Some offer time through volunteering. Others open doors, share expertise, advocate for change, or simply listen to the voices of their neighbors.
No contribution is too small when everyone has a seat at the table.
That is the work of collective impact.
Across Greater Charlotte, we see this every day as organizations align around community priorities, residents help shape neighborhood solutions, volunteers roll up their sleeves, and partners work together to strengthen housing stability, financial well-being, education, and opportunity.
When everyone contributes their unique strengths, communities do not just solve today’s challenges. They build lasting systems that create opportunity for generations to come.
Mecklenburg Design Day 3.0 was a reminder that collaboration is not passive. It requires participation. It asks each of us to move from spectator to contributor.
The question is not whether you have something to offer.
The question is:
What dish will you bring?
Whether it is your time, your voice, your expertise, your financial support, or your willingness to connect people and ideas, every contribution helps build a stronger community ecosystem.
