Series history vs. NC State
Wednesday is the 13th all-time meeting between the Spartans and Wolfpack, with UNCG trailing 5-6-1 in the series. The pair met twice in 2025 after a 13-year hiatus; the Blue & Gold drew NC State in Raleigh on Oct. 21, a goal from Enzo Dovlo earning a 1-1 draw against the then-No. 3 Wolfpack.
The second matchup last season came in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where NC State prevailed in Raleigh with a 2-0 win. The Wolfpack eventually advanced to the national title game, falling to Washington 3-2 in overtime.
Scouting the Wolfpack
NC State arrives in Greensboro on a three-game skid, though that stretch has included losses to then-No. 5 SMU and No. 17 Wake Forest. The Wolfpack opened the season 1-1-3 after beginning the year No. 2 in the nation and remain unranked this week.
Head coach Marc Hubbard's squad is aiming to recapture the form that saw the Wolfpack post a 16-3-4 record, the best in program history, last season on the way to NC State's first appearance in the national title game. In his first two seasons at the helm, Hubbard has led his side to a record of 26-8-9 and saw former striker Donavan Phillip hoist the 2025 MAC Hermann Trophy while defender Nikola Markovic was selected first overall in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.
Russell Berko leads the side with five goals (10 points) so far this season, one of seven NC State players to have found the back of the net but one of just two with multiple tallies. Aidan Payne and Ervin Cruz (five points) are tied for second most on the team.
Last time out for UNCG
The Spartans drew 0-0 at Mercer, opening Southern Conference (SoCon) play with a 1-0-1 record thanks to the third shutout of the season from the Blue & Gold. UNCG enters Wednesday night's contest having been off since Sept. 26 after the match against Furman, previously scheduled for Oct. 3, was postponed to Oct. 27.
Players of the week watch
UNCG has had five players earn recognition as a SoCon Player of the Week, the most of any team in the conference. Keaviano Francis (Sept. 1), Caleb Borneo (Sept. 2) and Malo Jungling (Sept. 22) have all taken home Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Trym Linberg (Aug. 25) and Seth Wilson (Sept. 15) have been recognized defensively.
Spartans in the rankings
UNCG stands at 16th in Division I in team goals-against average (.778), one of four team statistics that the Blue & Gold top the SoCon in. The others are save percentage (.800, 21st nationally), goal differential (eight, 43rd nationally) and shutout percentage (.333, 59th nationally).
Individually, Wilson ranks 22nd in goals-against average (.778), 29th in save percentage (.794) and 41st in shutouts (three) in goal across the national landscape; each of those marks leads the SoCon. Senior forward Steven Hernandez sits 49th in shots on goal per game (1.43) among the Division I ranks, ranking 50th in shot accuracy (.526) and 59th in shots per game (2.71) as well.
