HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University women's golfer Anna Howerton won the 28th Carolinas Women's Match Play at the Pinewood Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
A local product from Winston-Salem, N.C., Howerton won six matches — including the last three going into extra holes — to prevail and secure the title. She won the first three (7&6, 4&3, 5&4) before winning the final in extras (19 holes, 19 holes, and 20 holes).
"I'm very blessed to have won this week," Howerton said. "Getting in a lot of match play reps is great experience, and I know it will benefit me next season. I'm so grateful for the support from my coaches and team this week and I'm looking forward to building on this momentum!"
The rising senior isn't new to match play. Howerton won her Big South Conference semifinal match to clinch and send the Panthers to the match play finals. It helped HPU win its first Big South championship in program history for a team spot at the NCAA Regional.
Howerton placed 32nd (73-73-73) in her first postseason appearance at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. It was the team-leading best finish leading into her productive summer.
