Noah Thomas, 11, of Indian Trail, pans for four lead fish weights that were used to simulate panning for gold nuggets during the junior division of the 2014 Pan-O-Lympics, also known as the 25th Annual North Carolina Open Gold Panning Competition held Saturday at Reed Gold Mine. Competitors were timed as they sifted sand out of their pans, trying to clear the dirt away from the weights. If they lost a weight, it added 10 seconds to their time and when they finished they had to have very little sand in the pan.
