When news broke that a couple climbed the Empire State Building to celebrate their engagement, people were amazed by the determination, trust, and teamwork it took to reach the top. It wasn’t just about the climb. It was about believing that together, they could accomplish something extraordinary.
While most of us won’t find ourselves scaling the side of a skyscraper, we all face challenges that can feel just as steep.
At United Way of Greater Charlotte, we see those climbs every day. For many families, the journey means finding stable housing, keeping the lights on, affording childcare, accessing health and mental health services, or working toward financial stability. These challenges rarely happen one at a time, and they can quickly become overwhelming without the right support.
That’s why no one should have to climb alone.

For 95 years, United Way of Greater Charlotte has been bringing people together to strengthen nonprofits, neighborhoods and the lives of the people who call our region home. We connect nonprofits with resources, convene community partners around shared goals, invest in solutions that address urgent needs and work alongside residents to create lasting change. We know that meaningful progress happens when communities work together, not in isolation.
The most meaningful work happens during the climb. It’s found in the moments when a family avoids eviction because emergency assistance arrived at the right time. It’s when a parent finds affordable childcare and can return to work. It’s when a young person gains access to mentorship, education or mental health support. It’s when neighbors, volunteers, businesses and nonprofit organizations come together to remove barriers and create opportunities that didn’t exist before.
Every act of generosity, every partnership and every volunteer hour helps make the climb a little easier for someone else. Together, those individual efforts become something much bigger: a stronger, more connected community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
As we celebrate 95 years of strengthening nonprofits and neighborhoods, we’re reminded that our greatest accomplishments have never been reached alone. They’ve been built through collaboration, compassion and a shared commitment to helping one another move forward.
There are still challenges ahead, but we’re confident in what we can accomplish because we’ve spent nearly a century proving that when a community climbs together, everyone has a better chance of reaching new heights.
Because when we climb higher together, we all rise.
