One person is dead and two others were injured when a car was hit by a train in Catawba County early Friday morning.
The identities of those involved have not been released as of 2:15 p.m. on Friday. The Hickory Police Department said charges are pending in the case.
Hickory police officers responded to the crash around 3:30 a.m. at 17th Street Southwest near Main Avenue Northwest. The train hit a 2002 Cadillac DeVille. Three people were inside the vehicle, the Hickory Police Department said in a news release.
The driver of the DeVille was taken to an area hospital by Catawba County EMS. One passenger was transported to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The other passenger died at the scene, Hickory police said

The initial impact of the crash happened in the city limits of Hickory. The train pushed the DeVille into Long View town limits. The train and vehicle stopped in the 2000 block of Main Avenue Northwest, the Long View Fire Department said in a news release.
Norfolk Southern confirmed that the train belonged to their company.
The spokesperson said no Norfolk Southern employees were injured.
Hickory police said the track crossing arms indicating an oncoming train were working at the time of the collision.
Long View Fire Department personnel assisted with removing the individuals from the vehicle and patient care, the Long View Fire Department said.
Long View Fire Department stayed at the scene until the emergency operations were completed and hazards on the railway were addressed, Long View Fire Department said.
