Back in the 1940s Gypsy Caravans would visit my hometown of Bennettsville, South Carolina and camp a few miles outside of town. The camp was behind a community store in a wooded area. I never saw a large number of the horse-driven wagons parked in that area, but I do remember seeing some of the decorated wagons on our street and knew they were headed for that camping area. I don’t recall seeing many of the Gypsy people in town except for one little old man that I thought was one because he lived close to them. Some people called him “Snuffy Smith” after the comic strip character. He was short with a long beard and used a cane. Gypsies were rumored to have stolen little boys and girls; therefore I kept my distance from them...
